Icy Cold Art & Hot Auto Show

Last Sunday the temperature in Chicago was a blistering 1 degree, yet the sky was blue, so that provided an illusion of warmth. Jane and I braved the elements and went downtown to experience two unique events. Currently, but only for a couple more weeks, Millennium Park has the “Museum of Modern Ice” on display. This temporary wall of art measures nearly 100 feet long and is full of beautiful ice infused combinations of color. From a distance, it reminds me of a stained glass window, but up close its radically different. A beautiful kaleidoscope of pigment suspended in ice crystals. The Canadian born artist Gordon Halloran gave a lecture that day about his process and inspiration, but we skipped it in favor of heat at our next destination.

I have never attended an auto show, but have always loved the ‘concept’ car, and considering my current line of work I thought I needed to check it out. The 2008 Chicago Auto Show was the event’s 100 Anniversary. Now, as I have no real desire to own a car in the near future, seeing all these cars under one roof honestly started to change my mind. There were next generation eco-friendly cars to half million dollar luxury rides. Chrysler’s minivan, a casino on wheels aptly named Black Jack, comes complete with a fiber optic illuminated table in the back seat! Its fascinating to be able to sit in nearly every vehicle at the show. I had never sat in the driver’s seat of a Mini Cooper, Jaguar, Hummer H3, Infiniti or other dazzling cars before, but was able to compare and contrast hundreds of interiors and exteriors. Waiting in line is a pet-peeve of mine, but visitors could take an amusement park inspired ride around a huge off-road style track provided by Jeep and Dodge. Its no surprise that the paint jobs on many of these vehicles really turned me on; from vivid oranges and greens, to iridescent pearls and metallics with rainbow shimmers, to a matte black finish that almost resembles leather, the color of a car is nearly as important as its body style. I have begun to get my love of automobiles back. Enough words already, please click on either image below for a slideshow.

Another New One

Below is another new painting I started two weeks ago. It is a good size painting, measuring about 48 x 60 inches. There was once upon a time I thought this size was huge, but as I grew and pushed the boundaries, size became relative, and now I just consider this large. Resolution Time

Its that time of year when everyone is supposed to do some self-evaluation, and choose something to fix, or quit, or even start. I always try and set some goals in January in hopes of becoming a better person. This year I have set a few resolutions for myself; redesign my website again, never smoke again (and not “just one at the bar”), give more paintings away (I used to be good at this), workout more with my new gym membership (once a week is not cutting it), find an art dealer to represent me (to sell art of course), and prepare graduate school applications. My friend Matt Lynch gave me a book for my birthday, The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell, and tucked inside this insightful book is a postcard-turned-bookmark that says “Jonny – Ideas are worth more than anything. Find ways to make this the best year of your life.” This is great advice for anyone, having an idea and sticking to it is the way to accomplish goals. I also need to write more, and utilize this blog for more ideas and commentary about my artistic endeavors. One can look at all the junk (work) on my website that I have created, but now I need to give a voice to that work (junk). My eyes love color, and the rods and cones in my eyes detect wonderful things when certain pigments are blended together. This is who I am. A painter that gets aroused by raw pigments and excited when simple mixtures of color yield delightful discoveries.

Painting for Guitar Lessons

I mentioned last month that I will be trading a painting for guitar lessons, and this is an image of the painting that is near completion and will be offered. Scott Williamson has lent his time and patience once a week, for every week the last 2 months. I am just beginning to grasp the complexities of the guitar, and building up calluses on the tips of my fingers as a result. I never described the reasons for wanting to learn, but basically it comes down to a couple things. By playing the piano for a few years in my youth, I have always been a fan of pianists. Now I want to more fully appreciate guitarists. The medication should be taken once a day, or as aimhousepatong.com purchase generic viagra directed by your doctor. Many of my friends know how to play the guitar, so I wanted to relate to them more. I need to explore rhythm again, and want to open up parts of my brain that haven’t been utilized in awhile. Music has always lent itself to my painting, and I am curious if my painting will be able to offer anything to making music. My fingers still need work moving between chords, but I’m finding myself beginning to crave it, much like I crave a paint brush, pigment, and canvas. The painting below is 42 x 56 inches large, and curiously, also has splashes of paint that glow-in-the-dark!

Start of a New Portrait

The painting you see here is one I started 3 weeks ago, in which I am slowly applying thin glazes of oil in hopes of achieving a lifelike representation of myself. It is getting close to the end of 2007, and realizing I had not painted a self portrait this year compared to 4 the year before, I needed to get to work. I just finished reading a book about the history of the Mona Lisa, and it is believed it took Leonardo DaVinci four years to complete that painting. This levitra brand is an issue that decelerates the sex-related sexual action of men. His pfizer viagra achat female partner usually fights him for not satisfying her in bed. In some countries, as an illustration, the US and Canada, cialis in india price this could lead to time in prison. Now I am not saying I will work on this painting that long, but I am enjoying the slow, calculated process that is involved in achieving a fleshy appearance. Don’t get me wrong, this work is difficult, but rewarding when I step back from the canvas and observe the way I see myself. Some friends often bust my chops, and accuse me of being narcissistic, but they don’t realize; it is near impossible to find a model that will hold still for extended periods of time, costs nothing, and is always available.
