Happy Thanksgiving

Last week was busy as my mother arrived on Thursday, and then friend Ross Harmon the next day. I also saw and thoroughly enjoyed the premier of Casino Royale. This was the best Bond film in such a long time. The producers did a fantastic job redefining the spy, Daniel Craig is tough not suave. The plot was believable and engaging. Bond did not rely on gadgets and there was not an ‘evil lair’ at the end of the film. Nonstop action, and worth seeing. On friday, Ross only had 24 hours to explore London, I met him at the Tube station and then found £5 drifting on the street, the day was starting off great. We walked downtown, and I showed him all the major sites, and even cultured him in the National Gallery and later at the Tate Modern. Jane joined us later and we drank some beers and rode the slides! Then we found a quant pub, ate some grub, and drank many more pints of the good stuff. It was great to catch up with a friend from the states, even though he made me miss Colorado. The lucky guy had already been skiing this year!

My mom explored Scotland for a day, and then took in London and Salisbury. If only there was more time! She was thrilled to see where I live, and my studio. We enjoyed many great meals, and card games. We taught Jane how to play Euchre, the two of us made a great team, and we landed up coming from behind to beat my mom and Jerry.

Yesterday for Thanksgiving I prepared a fantastic meal, and had some of my studio mates come over for their first Thanksgiving celebration. After dinner we sat around the table and painted portraits of each other. I had to explain a few times what the holiday was all about, and they were confused because they thought we slaughtered the Native Americans. I assured them before all that happened, the Native Americans opened their heart and soul to the English pilgrims, and they shared a great feast. Which really made me think many Americans celebrate this holiday and probably forget the true meaning of the day. I don’t even know if I know the true meaning. Were/Are we thanking the Native Americans? Are we thankful to be alive? Are we thankful the native peoples of North America were not as technologically advanced as the English settlers? (So we could plunder that great people’s land) Are we thankful for turkey and gravy and an excuse to stuff ourselves? I don’t want to sound pessimistic. I just had a hard time explaining the holiday to my English friends, so it made me think. Personally, its unfortunate the Native Americans and Europeans did not assimilate better when the United States of America was forming. But the past cannot be changed, only the present and future can. Don’t forget to ask yourself what you are thankful for, and be respectful of others, and Mother Earth. If you share the space you occupy, others will share with you. I am truely thankful to be alive, in good health, with great family and friends. I miss you all and hope you had a great holiday.
