Last Sunday the temperature in Chicago was a blistering 1 degree, yet the sky was blue, so that provided an illusion of warmth. Jane and I braved the elements and went downtown to experience two unique events. Currently, but only for a couple more weeks, Millennium Park has the “Museum of Modern Ice” on display. This temporary wall of art measures nearly 100 feet long and is full of beautiful ice infused combinations of color. From a distance, it reminds me of a stained glass window, but up close its radically different. A beautiful kaleidoscope of pigment suspended in ice crystals. The Canadian born artist Gordon Halloran gave a lecture that day about his process and inspiration, but we skipped it in favor of heat at our next destination.
I have never attended an auto show, but have always loved the ‘concept’ car, and considering my current line of work I thought I needed to check it out. The 2008 Chicago Auto Show was the event’s 100 Anniversary. Now, as I have no real desire to own a car in the near future, seeing all these cars under one roof honestly started to change my mind. Chrysler’s minivan, a casino on wheels aptly named Black Jack, comes complete with a fiber optic illuminated table in the back seat! Its fascinating to be able to sit in nearly every vehicle at the show. I had never sat in the driver’s seat of a Mini Cooper, Jaguar, Hummer H3, Infiniti or other dazzling cars before, but was able to compare and contrast hundreds of interiors and exteriors. Waiting in line is a pet-peeve of mine, but visitors could take an amusement park inspired ride around a huge off-road style track provided by Jeep and Dodge. Its no surprise that the paint jobs on many of these vehicles really turned me on; from vivid oranges and greens, to iridescent pearls and metallics with rainbow shimmers, to a matte black finish that almost resembles leather, the color of a car is nearly as important as its body style.
