A year ago there was group of Hispanic families celebrating a birthday in the alley in my backyard. I really enjoyed watching this festive party, it made me happy. As a kid I participated in a few pinata bashing events, but it was never like this…perhaps it never felt authentic. As I observed this party from above on my second floor deck, I instantly thought it would make a great painting.
I have never seen, nor do I know of any paintings depicting a pinata party. Drawing on inspiration from the Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer show a few months back at the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as some crude snapshots taken from my iPhone, I created the painting below. Bear in mind this is still a work in progress (aren’t they all?) but I feel it is nearing completion. Click on the image for a larger version/screen-saver.
