The last blog I wrote was erased because of computer error, hopefully this will be more successful. I started school last week, met with my professors and tutors, all of whom are great people. Andrew Stahl is the head of the painting department, and is very credible in the art community, as well as my personal tutor Phyllida Barlow, who is the first female supervisor (Undergraduate Affairs) ever at the Slade.
My studio space is amazing, I think it is the best at the school, it is located in the ‘Round Room.’ (I think Phish would be proud.) There are amazing skylights and only 6 of us sharing the space. I got started on a few paintings last week, a really large, colorful, expressive piece and a portrait of Jane. On Monday after school introductions, we walked toward the National Gallery, and Tiger Woods was in Leicester Square doing a EA Sports ‘Tiger Challange’. They had film crews and mini-golf set up, Tiger was fresh off his Ryder Cup loss, but in great spirits. Jane and I watched from about 30 feet away. Then we went to the gallery and took in some amazing Carravagios and Rembrants. On Tuesday, we went to a gallery opening of a Slade grad student, drank wine and met some fellow students. This gallery was in Chelsea, so we got to explore a posh neighborhood.
On Wednesday, we went to the Tate Modern to see the Kandinsky show, which was to end later that week. I was blown away by his paintings. For all of you that do not know me well enough, Vassily Kandinsky is my favorite artist, father of modern abstraction. I listened to some classical music on my iPod and explored more than 8 rooms of his work. Kandinsky wrote books about the spirituality and similarity of music and painting, so I thought it would be appropriate that I enjoyed the two together. Then, after being inspired I spent the rest of the week painting.

On Saturday, I headed downtown alone because Jane had been battleing this nasty cough, which I hope I do not contract. I explored the National Gallery some more, then the National Portrait Gallery, and the Royal Academy of Art. Then I just walked around for hours, read a bit, and waited for the ND game to start. I decided I would grab a few beers before going to the Sports Cafe, cause it is cheaper to buy 4 beers at the grocery than one at the bar. (Duh!) And you are not going to believe this, but in the beer section at the Tesco was Sergio Garcia! What was it with me and Pro Golfers last week? He was with his beautiful blonde girlfriend and two other guys. I instantly said ‘What up Sergio!?’ and he said ‘Hey man.’ Perplexed by this chance meeting, I had to say more, but not be pushy and ask for an autograph (which can be tacky). I don’t think many other people knew who he was, because in this extremely crowded grocery, he wasn’t getting many looks. I grabbed some beer, and then walked past Sergio toward the register and said something like ’Sergio, you played excellent last weekend at the Ryder Cup (cause he really did)’ then he emphatically said ‘Thanks bro’ and winked his eye at me. In hind sight, I would have loved to talked more, maybe given him one of my business cards, whatever, but when you are around a celebrity, you definately do not want to be over anxious. The meeting wasn’t as cool as cooking steaks with John Elway in Colorado, or shaking Goose Gossage’s hand on the golf course, but it is story worthy.
I noticed the Bears are playing great, but the White Sox will not repeat. Jimmy Rogers is happy cause the Hanky will be appearing in the post season again. I have been watching a lot of football too, just not the same kind. Jane and I may soon see the play ‘Chicago’ starring Ashlee Simpson, even though I would rather see Arsenal or Chelsea play. Have a great week, I know I will.
