So my time abroad is coming to an end, and the final two weeks at school see me in a frenzy to finish more paintings and document everything before returning home. I intend on putting most of my semester’s work online by Wednesday of next week at the latest. I have one more assessment on Monday and then I will take photos and slideshow everything. Our whole school is busy preparing for an art show at a place called Woburn starting tommorrow. I will put my large ‘studio painting’ on display, everyone seems to enjoy this piece, as I have gotten numerous complements already. Its quite funny and there is a lot of symbolism within it. I have added portraits of a few of my professors and friends, just not enough time to get everyone I would like. This is a safe painting to display at Woburn compared to my other sexually sugestive work, but also one everyone can relate to, and create their own dialogue for.
Next week after the show there is an all school party, then Jane and I pack our bags. On the 16th we will fly to Italy for 8 days, beginning in Florence and taking the train south through Tuscany, going as far as we can to find some warm weather. We would love to check out the Amalfi coast before finishing our journey in Rome on the 23rd. Then back to London for less than 24 hours before flying back to Chicago. It will be a hectic 3 weeks, but one we are both prepared and excited for. I may only have time to write one more blog between now and Christmas, so I apologize.
A great friend of mine at the Slade is Steve Allen, he is from Scotland and is one of my favorite artists here. He is a unique individual, tall with long black hair, with paint always on his pants, shoes and hands. Like me, everyone knows Steve at the Slade. He has amazing charisma. He is passionate about art much like myself, and has a silly sense of humor. Steve and I had an idea to collaborate over a month ago, and we finally pulled it off over the past few days. We spent time discussing ideas, the birth of painting was one idea, but basically it came down to just throwing some paint down. He has a graphic quality to his work, almost cartoon-like, with smilely faces and ‘kitsch’ symbols almost always finding their way to the surface. He is all about the ‘art of distruction’ and will build up amazing paintings only to annihilate them later. I find his work full of energy, humor, and with amazing, almost haphazard brushwork. Sometimes he goes to far, other times not far enough. We are both expressive painters. Steve feels the same way about my paintings as I do about his, which is why he befriended me, which is how we teamed up.

In the second to last stage, most people would assume the painting was just done by Steve. Yes, his symbols are more prevailant, but this naturally happened because he worked over my beginning. Truth is we painted the majority of it at the same time. I am curious about the result when the roles are reversed. He suggested I work back over it again when the paint drys, which is exactly what I did the following day so his elements wouldn’t dominate. We had messy fun painting this. Color and compostion choices were made by both, but supplies were all mine, so I get to keep this masterpiece. Click Here to View Animation
